Chandigarh: The ongoing dispute over the installation of smart (chip-enabled) electricity meters in Punjab has escalated into a major public protest. After months of resistance, farmer unions have now announced a state-level campaign, declaring that from December 10 onward, they will begin removing smart meters from people’s homes and depositing them directly at Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) offices. The campaign has been launched under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.
Meters Will Be Removed Only on Request, No Forced Entry: Union
The union has clarified that no volunteer will forcibly enter any home to remove a meter. Only those who contact the union and ask for the removal of their chip-enabled meter will be assisted. According to union leader Dilbag Singh, meters from villages and cities alike will be collected and handed over to PSPCL as a mark of protest.
Farmers Release Helpline Numbers, Urge People to Join Campaign
Dilbag Singh said helpline numbers have been issued for people who wish to get their smart meters removed. He stated that the campaign is a stand against what they believe is the government’s push toward privatization of the power sector. He appealed to citizens to support the protest, saying, “If you want uninterrupted electricity, if you don’t want your children’s studies or your home and office work disrupted, then you must oppose this meter policy.”
Farmers Claim Smart Meters Will Lead to Prepaid Electricity System
Farmer leaders argue that smart meters will eventually shift electricity supply to a prepaid model. They claim:
– When mobile recharge validity ends, service stops;
– Similarly, when a meter’s balance finishes, electricity will shut down automatically.
They say this would result in frequent power cuts, as most households may struggle to recharge on time.
Union Takes Responsibility if Action Is Taken Against Citizens
Dilbag Singh also stated that if PSPCL files any police case or imposes a fine on a farmer or citizen for removing a meter, the union will take full responsibility. “We will ensure FIRs are cancelled and fines are withdrawn. People should not be afraid,” he assured.
