Mansa (Punjab)— In a deeply disturbing incident that underscores the growing menace of synthetic drug abuse in Punjab, a couple from Mansa district allegedly sold their six-month-old baby for ₹1.80 lakh to sustain their addiction to ‘chitta’.
The couple, identified as Gurman Kaur and Sandeep Singh, reportedly executed the sale under the guise of a legal adoption. However, police investigations later confirmed that the transaction involved an illegal exchange of money. “No adoption deed can legally involve any form of payment. The matter is under detailed investigation,” a Bareta Police spokesperson said.
The revelation has sent shockwaves through the community, especially as Gurman Kaur was once a state-level athlete, symbolizing how drug addiction can destroy even the most promising lives. According to police sources, the couple first met on Instagram before marrying. Over time, both became addicted to synthetic drugs, which eventually pushed them into this tragic act.
Officials confirmed that a case has been registered and further inquiries are underway to determine the network involved in facilitating the illegal adoption and the supply of narcotics to the couple. Authorities are also considering charging those who purchased the child under relevant sections of the law.
