Amritsar: A suspected terror plot was thwarted early Saturday after an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered near the Rayya police post in Punjab’s Amritsar district, officials said.
Police received information around 10 p.m. on Friday about a suspicious object lying behind the police post, which falls under the Beas police station area. Acting swiftly, security personnel sealed off the vicinity and initiated a search operation.
A bomb disposal team was immediately deployed to examine the object. After inspection, the squad confirmed it was an IED and successfully neutralized it, averting what authorities described as a potentially serious incident.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Sohail Qasim Mir said no organisation or criminal group has so far claimed responsibility for planting the explosive device. He added that investigations are underway to determine who was behind the attempt and how the device was placed near the police facility.
Security in and around the area has been tightened, with additional patrols and checks being carried out as a precaution. Forensic teams are also expected to analyse materials recovered from the site to gather further leads.
Officials said timely information and quick response by local police prevented any casualties or damage. Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
