Amritsar: A violent clash between two factions at Gurudwara Baba Jago Shaheed in village Kohali, under the Chogawan constituency of Amritsar, resulted in gunfire and serious injuries on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The conflict reportedly erupted over a donated LCD screen, despite the religious site already being under Section 145 (prohibitory orders) due to a long-standing dispute between the two groups.
According to Rajwinder Kaur, mother of local resident Gurlal Singh, the trouble began when a devotee gifted an LCD to the Gurudwara, which was subsequently taken home by Baba Harjinder Singh. This sparked an argument that escalated when Sarpanch Gurjant Singh Kohali, along with associates Kinderbir Singh and Gurjeet Singh, allegedly reached Gurlal’s residence and engaged in verbal abuse. When Gurlal Singh, Jatinder Singh, and Satnam Singh arrived at the scene, they were reportedly assaulted. The situation turned critical when Sarpanch Gurjant Singh allegedly attempted to shoot Jatinder Singh inside the Gurudwara premises, but the bullet accidentally struck his own associate, Malkit Singh, who is now in serious condition.
Conversely, Baba Harjinder Singh alleged that the Sarpanch’s faction created a ruckus outside his house and attacked his son, Jhujar Singh, with a kirpan (sword). Jhujar Singh is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Rajwinder Kaur claimed that the entire incident, including the firing, has been captured on CCTV cameras installed at the location, providing crucial evidence for the investigators.
Lopoke Police Station SHO Shamsher Singh confirmed the firing incident and stated that a high-level probe is underway. He noted that the Gurudwara was already a contested site under legal restrictions, and the violation of these orders combined with the violence will lead to strict criminal action. Police personnel have been deployed in the village to prevent further escalation, and statements from both injured parties are being recorded to register a formal FIR.
