Amritsar: A 28-year-old man, identified as Manjeet Singh, committed suicide by hanging in the Gumatala area of Amritsar following a prolonged family dispute. Manjeet, who worked as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) at Government Senior Secondary School, Shershah, reportedly took his life under the strain of domestic tensions.
According to the complaint filed by his brother, Malkit Singh, the deceased was married to Amandeep Kaur of Ghanuppur Kale village around 18 months ago. Conflicts began soon after their marriage and, despite a temporary reconciliation through mediation, issues resurfaced. Approximately six months ago, Amandeep had returned to her parental home after an argument, leaving behind their eight-month-old daughter.
The incident escalated after the death of Manjeet’s mother on October 15, 2025. While he went with his brother to collect the death certificate from Green Avenue Hospital, Amandeep repeatedly called him. Allegedly distressed by delays in returning home, she consumed poison (Phenyl) and was admitted to Hartaj Hospital for treatment. During the hospital visit, Manjeet’s father-in-law, Harjinder Singh, and brother-in-law, Navdeep Singh, reportedly threatened his brother, warning against filing complaints.
In a state of fear and mental distress, Manjeet returned home and hanged himself. A suicide note recovered from his pocket stated, “I am ending my life due to my grief with Amandeep Kaur and her mother.”
Based on the complaint, Cheherta Police have registered a case against Amandeep Kaur, her mother Davinder Kaur, and father-in-law Harjinder Singh. The investigation is ongoing, and forensic examination of the suicide note has been ordered.
