Amritsar: The Akal Takht has appealed to all Sikh Members of Parliament to strongly raise the demand in Parliament for renaming the Centre-declared ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ as ‘Sahibzaade Shahadat Diwas’. The call was made through a special letter issued by acting Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, who said the change is essential to honour Sikh history and sentiments.
The letter urges Sikh MPs to mount pressure on the Central Government to officially declare the day as the martyrdom day of the Sahibzaade. It stresses that the demand is not about altering a name but about recognising and respecting the emotional and historical significance this day holds for the Sikh community.
The Akal Takht Secretariat has confirmed that the communication was emailed to all Sikh MPs across the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The objection to the name ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ has been consistently raised by the Sikh community since 2022. According to the Akal Takht, the Sikh Sangat has sent thousands of letters requesting that the name be changed to reflect Sikh tradition and properly honour the sacrifice of the Sahibzaade.
The letter was sent to a total of 14 Sikh MPs, including Dr. Amar Singh, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Malvinder Singh, Sukhjinder Singh, Vikramjit Singh, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Harbhajan Singh, among others.
