Chandigarh: Chandigarh experienced its first spell of intense fog this season on Thursday, as a thick blanket of mist settled over the city, sharply reducing visibility and affecting normal life. The fog descended in the early hours, turning roads hazy and making the morning commute particularly challenging.
Despite the conditions, school-going children could be seen hurrying along streets, eager to reach their classrooms on time. Bundled up in layers to shield themselves from the biting cold, students and parents moved cautiously through the fog-filled surroundings.
Traffic across several parts of the city slowed as drivers struggled with limited visibility. The combination of cold temperatures and dense fog raised safety concerns, prompting authorities to issue advisories. Commuters were urged to reduce speed, maintain safe distances and use fog lights while driving.
Meteorological officials indicated that the region is likely to continue experiencing cold and foggy mornings over the coming days. Residents have been advised to remain alert and take precautions, particularly during early morning and late-night travel.
In response to the prevailing cold wave, the Punjab government has announced a winter break for schools from December 24 to December 31. The decision has been welcomed by families, offering relief to students as temperatures across the region continue to fall.
