Kanpur: Kanpur police on Thursday detained Shivam Mishra, son of prominent tobacco trader KK Mishra, in connection with last week’s luxury car accident on the city’s VIP Road that left several people injured.
The arrest comes four days after the dramatic crash involving a Lamborghini Huracan drew intense public scrutiny. Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal confirmed that the 35-year-old was taken into custody and would be produced before a magistrate shortly.
“He has been arrested and will be presented in court within the stipulated time,” the police chief said.
The case was initiated after an 18-year-old e-rickshaw driver, Mohd Taufeeq, who sustained injuries in the collision, filed a formal complaint. While the defence later suggested that the complainant was reluctant to pursue the matter, investigators said the case would proceed based on the available evidence.
The incident unfolded when the high-performance sports car allegedly lost control on the busy stretch, striking vehicles and pedestrians. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the car ploughed into traffic, leaving multiple people hurt. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, and the vehicle was impounded for forensic examination.
Controversy surrounded the identity of the driver from the outset. Police initially named Shivam Mishra as the person behind the wheel, citing CCTV footage and statements from bystanders who claimed he was seen being pulled from the driver’s seat moments after the crash.
However, the narrative shifted when a man identified as Mohan stepped forward, asserting that he was driving the car at the time. According to officials, the individual attempted to surrender before a court, but his plea was not accepted.
Mishra’s legal team maintained that a hired driver was operating the vehicle and further claimed that Mishra had suffered a medical emergency that contributed to the accident. Investigators, after examining surveillance footage and other material evidence, dismissed this version and reiterated that Mishra was driving when the collision occurred.
Police have booked him under sections pertaining to rash and negligent driving causing injuries. The case is expected to be taken up in court as the investigation continues.
