Amritsar: With India set to lock horns with Pakistan in their ICC T20 Men’s World Cup group fixture on February 25, cricket fever has gripped Amritsar like never before. The high-voltage encounter has sparked a wave of anticipation across the city, with fans preparing for what promises to be a nail-biting contest.

After uncertainty surrounding scheduling and boycott discussions, confirmation of the marquee clash has only intensified the buzz. Restaurants, hotels and pubs across the city have announced themed screenings, complete with special menus and match-night packages, as supporters plan to gather in large numbers to witness the showdown.

However, for Amritsar, this match carries added significance. Local boy Abhishek Sharma is expected to feature in the playing XI after missing the previous game against Namibia due to illness. His return has become a focal point of conversation among cricket lovers in the city.

“Abhishek hasn’t had the smoothest campaign so far, especially after being hospitalised. But we’re confident he’ll rise to the occasion,” said Kunal Sehgal, a local entrepreneur planning a private screening with friends. He recalled the opener’s aggressive knock against Pakistan in last year’s Asia Cup and expressed hope for another memorable performance.

Several prominent clubs, including Rambagh Club, Amritsar Club, Service Club and Heritage Club, have also arranged exclusive screenings for members, reflecting the scale of excitement surrounding the match.

Local markets are feeling the build-up too. While sports equipment sales have remained steady, vendors report brisk sales of Indian flags in the days leading up to the game. “India-Pakistan matches are always emotional affairs. Even people who don’t usually follow cricket make it a point to watch,” said Deghpal Singh, who runs a sports goods shop near Hall Gate.

Amid the backdrop of tense political relations between the two nations, the rivalry once again transcends sport. In Amritsar, though, the spotlight shines a little brighter on one of its own, as fans wait eagerly to see Abhishek Sharma step onto the field for the much-anticipated clash.
