Andhra Pradesh: The number of fatalities linked to a suspected milk adulteration incident in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 16, with several others still receiving medical care, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The cases were reported from parts of East Godavari district, particularly in areas such as Lalacheruvu, where residents allegedly consumed contaminated milk. Authorities said at least three patients are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals in Rajamahendravaram.
The incident dates back to mid-February, when people began experiencing serious health complications after consuming milk supplied in the affected localities. Symptoms reported included severe vomiting, abdominal pain, reduced urine output and acute kidney-related issues, which led to multiple hospital admissions.
The situation came to light on February 22, when a cluster of patients with signs of kidney failure was identified in Chowdeswaranagar and Swaroopanagar. This prompted health officials to launch an in-depth epidemiological investigation to determine the source and extent of contamination.
Authorities are continuing their inquiry into the suspected adulteration, while health teams remain deployed in the affected areas to monitor residents and prevent further cases. Officials have also urged the public to remain cautious and report any unusual symptoms immediately.
