Srinagar: Security forces carried out surprise checks in the Lal Chowk area of Srinagar on Friday as part of heightened measures ahead of the seventh anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama suicide attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel, officials said.
Teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted inspections and searches across the commercial hub, focusing on hotels and other establishments in the area. Officers examined guest rooms, checked luggage and verified identification documents of those staying in local hotels.
Authorities said the intensified security arrangements are aimed at preventing any untoward incident in the run-up to the anniversary of the February 14, 2019 attack.
The Pulwama attack occurred when an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force at Lethpora in Pulwama district along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The suicide bombing left 40 personnel dead, marking one of the deadliest attacks on Indian security forces in Kashmir.
Officials said security across sensitive locations in the city has been stepped up as a precautionary measure.
