New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid heartfelt tributes to social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule on his 200th birth anniversary, praising his lifelong commitment to equality, justice, and education.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister described Phule as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to uplifting the marginalised and empowering women through education. He emphasised that Phule’s efforts transformed education into a powerful tool for social change and inclusion, adding that his ideas continue to inspire the nation in its pursuit of progress.

Marking the beginning of the bicentenary celebrations, Modi said that Phule’s thoughts remain relevant in guiding society towards fairness and empowerment, especially for the underprivileged sections.

Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu joined the Prime Minister in offering floral tributes at Prerna Sthal within the Parliament premises. Several prominent leaders, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Union Ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and JP Nadda, along with former Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, also paid homage to the reformer.

Born on April 11, 1827, in Maharashtra, Phule emerged as a pioneering figure in India’s social reform movement. Along with his wife, Savitribai Phule, he played a crucial role in advancing women’s education and challenging caste-based discrimination.

Phule also founded the Satyashodhak Samaj to promote social equality and secure rights for peasants and oppressed communities. His work laid the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable society, making him one of the most influential reformers in Indian history.

The government has planned a series of events across the country to commemorate his 200th birth anniversary, aiming to spread awareness about his contributions and ideals.
