Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir), August 31, 2025 – More than 200 people have been rescued so far in flood-hit areas of Kathua district, where rescue and relief operations continue in full swing, officials said on Sunday.

Senior Superintendent of Police Saxena confirmed that 75 more people were evacuated on Saturday, taking the total rescue count beyond 200. He added that several families had been relocated as a preventive measure.

Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat visited forward areas of the border district to assess the situation and review security arrangements. During his inspection, he examined the Lakhanpur-Madhopur bridges, which were damaged due to flash floods. Senior officers from Punjab, including the SSP of Pathankot and SP Traffic Punjab, also participated in the joint review of rescue and repair efforts.

Authorities said coordination meetings were held with CAPF, district officers, and local police to streamline flood relief operations.

Meanwhile, the Shree Mata Vaishno Devi yatra remains suspended for the sixth consecutive day due to landslides triggered by incessant rainfall. Last week, a massive landslide near the Vaishno Devi temple in Katra claimed over 30 lives and left 20 others injured. The tragedy occurred near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkuwari, midway on the trek to the shrine, when heavy rainfall triggered falling debris on Tuesday afternoon.

Rescue and repair work across the region is continuing as authorities battle to restore normalcy.
