Mumbai: Two passenger aircraft operated by Air India and IndiGo were involved in a minor ground incident at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed that no passengers or crew members were injured, and everyone on board both flights is safe.
The incident took place during routine ground operations when the wingtips of the two aircraft brushed against each other. Air India flight AI 2732, scheduled to depart for Coimbatore, was stationary on the taxiway awaiting clearance for take-off. At the same time, IndiGo flight 6E 791, which had just landed from Hyderabad, was taxiing towards its parking bay when the contact occurred.
In an official statement, IndiGo said that one of its aircraft made wingtip contact with another airline’s aircraft while taxiing. The airline added that all passengers were safely disembarked after the aircraft was parked and that the plane is currently undergoing mandatory maintenance inspections. IndiGo also confirmed that aviation authorities have been informed and an investigation is underway.
Air India also acknowledged the incident, stating that its aircraft suffered minor wingtip damage while waiting on the taxiway before departure. The airline said the aircraft has been taken out of service as a precaution and will undergo detailed technical checks. Passengers were safely escorted off the aircraft, and alternative travel arrangements are being organised to ensure they reach their destination as soon as possible.
Airport officials said overall operations at Mumbai airport remained normal, though minor delays were reported for the flights directly affected by the incident.
