New Delhi — A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.
According to seismic data, the tremor occurred at 11:48:21 am IST at a shallow depth of about 15 kilometres. The epicentre was located in the Bay of Bengal at latitude 12.59 degrees north and longitude 92.34 degrees east.
Sharing details on X, the NCS said the earthquake was recorded in the open sea region, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The development comes a day after a stronger earthquake of magnitude 6.8 was reported in the North Pacific Ocean, underlining continued seismic activity across different regions worldwide.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic movements, while experts have noted that shallow earthquakes, though moderate in magnitude, can be felt over wider areas depending on local geological conditions.
