New Delhi: India has welcomed the United Kingdom’s decision to impose sanctions on pro-Khalistan extremist networks associated with the banned group Babbar Khalsa, calling it a strong step toward reinforcing global action against terrorism and illegal financial channels.

During the weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi appreciates London’s move targeting individuals and entities involved in anti-India extremist operations. He noted that such elements endanger not just India and the UK but communities worldwide.

“We welcome the steps taken by the UK government to sanction anti-India extremist entities. These measures strengthen the international fight against terrorism and extremism, and help curb illicit financial flows and transnational criminal networks,” Jaiswal said.

He added that India looks forward to deeper cooperation with the UK to enhance counter-terrorism coordination and security partnerships.

The UK government recently introduced sanctions designed to disrupt the financial operations of Babbar Khalsa—marking the first time such actions have specifically targeted the organisation. The measures include an asset freeze and a director disqualification order against Gurpreet Singh Rehal, who is suspected of involvement in terror-linked activities in India.

Authorities in the UK also announced an asset freeze on Babbar Akali Lehar for promoting and supporting Babbar Khalsa’s operations. The UK Treasury noted that Rehal has been involved in recruitment, fundraising, and procurement of weapons and military equipment for both groups.

Babbar Akali Lehar has similarly been linked to Babbar Khalsa’s terror activities, including mobilisation and promotion efforts.

All funds and economic resources in the UK controlled by Rehal or Babbar Akali Lehar have now been frozen. Rehal has also been barred from serving as a company director or participating in company management in any capacity.

The sanctions were imposed under the Counter-Terrorism (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019, which empower the UK Treasury to restrict assets and activities of individuals or organisations suspected of involvement in terrorism. Babbar Khalsa remains a proscribed terrorist organisation under UK law.
