New Delhi: India on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah and expressed strong concern over reports of extremist elements announcing plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi had conveyed its anxiety over the worsening security environment in Bangladesh and specifically flagged the activities of certain extremist groups targeting the Indian diplomatic mission. India also rejected what it described as a “false narrative” being propagated by these elements in connection with recent developments in Bangladesh.
The MEA said it was unfortunate that Bangladesh’s interim government had so far neither conducted a comprehensive investigation into the incidents nor shared any substantive evidence with India. However, the ministry did not provide further details about the events in question.
Reiterating diplomatic norms, the MEA said it expects the interim administration in Bangladesh to fully ensure the safety and security of all Indian Missions and Posts, in line with its international obligations.
During the meeting, the envoy was apprised of India’s serious concerns regarding the deteriorating security situation and the potential threat posed to Indian diplomatic personnel and property in Dhaka.
The MEA underlined that India remains committed to peace and stability in Bangladesh, highlighting the close and friendly ties between the peoples of the two countries. It noted that bilateral relations are deeply rooted in Bangladesh’s liberation struggle and have been strengthened through sustained development cooperation and people-to-people engagement.
India also reiterated its consistent call for free, fair, inclusive and credible elections in Bangladesh, conducted in a peaceful and secure environment.
