Port Blair — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a cyclone alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, warning of a developing cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal that is expected to intensify from October 21.

According to IMD officials, heavy rainfall is likely to lash several parts of the islands until October 23, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Local port warnings have already been issued in anticipation of the adverse weather.

“Heavy rain measuring 7–11 cm is very likely at one or two places over the Nicobar Islands,” an IMD official said. “Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph and lightning are expected at isolated places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 21, 22, and 23.”

The department added that similar weather conditions, including gusty winds and lightning, could continue on October 24 and 25.

“Squally weather with surface winds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is very likely over the Andaman Sea from October 22 to 23. Sea conditions will remain rough for the next five days, and fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar coast till October 24,” the official added.

Authorities have urged boat operators, islanders, and tourists to exercise extreme caution due to possible surging waves and turbulent seas. Recreational water activities are to be carried out only with proper safety measures in place.

The local administration has also appealed to tourists and residents to stay away from the sea and adhere strictly to all safety advisories and guidelines issued by officials.
