ICAO Tightens Global Aircraft Emission and Noise Standards

New Delhi: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has adopted stricter global environmental standards for aircraft, setting August 3, 2026, as the effective date and January 1, 2027, for worldwide implementation. The revised framework mandates tighter controls on carbon emissions and noise levels, covering new aircraft designs as well as next-generation supersonic jets, in a move aimed at aligning the aviation sector with global climate goals.

With the formal adoption complete, ICAO said the updated standards would require manufacturers to incorporate advanced and cleaner technologies into aircraft design, supported by enhanced testing and certification procedures to ensure uniform compliance across countries. The body noted that the new rules are intended to promote sustainability while encouraging innovation in aviation engineering.

Under the revised norms, the carbon dioxide emissions standard has been made 10 per cent more stringent and will apply to new aircraft type designs from 2031. A more complex emissions requirement has also been introduced for aircraft already in production, which will take effect for new deliveries from 2035, thereby extending regulatory oversight beyond future models.

Noise standards have also been tightened significantly. ICAO has reduced permissible noise levels by six decibels for larger aircraft and two decibels for smaller ones, with these norms set to apply to new aircraft designs from 2029. The organisation said the updated subsonic rules are expected to drive investment in fuel-efficient and quieter technologies, delivering benefits for passengers, airport communities and the broader environment.

The Council has also laid the groundwork for the return of supersonic aviation, stating that such aircraft will be required to meet the same noise limits as subsonic planes from 2029. This provision seeks to address longstanding concerns over sonic booms and operational noise associated with high-speed travel.

ICAO said the revised standards reflect the complexities of integrating emerging technologies while maintaining environmental safeguards. The framework has been developed over several years through its environmental protection committee, involving technical analysis, consultations with member states and industry stakeholders, and evaluation of evolving aircraft and engine technologies.
