New Delhi: Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the businessmen behind the North Goa nightclub where a devastating fire claimed 25 lives earlier this month, are on their way back to India after being deported from Thailand, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The brothers, who jointly own the nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, had travelled abroad shortly after the December 6 fire. Their departure prompted Indian authorities to seek international assistance, following which an Interpol Blue Corner Notice was issued to trace their location. Thai police later detained them at a resort in Phuket.
After their passports were cancelled by Indian authorities, emergency travel documents were arranged and shared with the Thai government to facilitate their return. The deportation process was carried out in coordination with Indian central agencies, the Goa Police, and the Indian Embassy in Bangkok.
Upon landing in Delhi, the Luthra brothers are expected to be produced before the Patiala House Court. The Goa Police will then seek transit custody to bring them to the state for further questioning in connection with the case.
Investigators allege that the fatal blaze erupted during a fire performance held at the club, which was allegedly operating without mandatory safety clearances. Authorities claim the venue lacked essential fire protection systems and adequate emergency exits, despite hosting high-risk events.
A criminal case has been registered against the brothers under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 105, which allows for imprisonment of up to 10 years. Police officials said evidence is being collected to document all regulatory and safety violations ahead of filing a detailed charge sheet.
Meanwhile, the Goa government has constituted a dedicated legal team to oversee prosecution and ensure the case is pursued effectively. Officials said the swift deportation marks a major step forward in the investigation, which initially appeared likely to be delayed due to legal and procedural challenges overseas.
The fire tragedy had shocked the state, as victims included tourists as well as staff members present at the venue. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to holding all responsible parties accountable and tightening enforcement of safety norms at entertainment establishments.
