Mumbai: A devastating road accident claimed at least four lives early Monday morning after a series of collisions involving around 20 vehicles on the Mumbai–Delhi Expressway. Officials said poor visibility caused by heavy smog was a key factor behind the crash.

The incident took place around 5 am when thick layers of smog enveloped the expressway, making it difficult for motorists to judge distances. According to initial reports, vehicles moving at high speed were unable to stop in time, resulting in a chain reaction that involved cars as well as heavy commercial vehicles.

Among those killed were two police personnel who were on duty at the time of the accident. Between 15 and 20 people sustained serious injuries, while several others were also hurt. Authorities said the exact number of injured is still being verified.

Rescue operations began immediately after the collision was reported. Teams from the police, fire department and emergency medical services reached the site to extract people trapped inside damaged vehicles and shift the injured to nearby hospitals. Some of the vehicles were left badly mangled due to the force of the impact.

The accident led to major traffic disruptions on the expressway, with movement remaining affected for several hours. Officials worked to remove the wreckage and restore normal flow of vehicles. Commuters were advised to take alternate routes and follow safety advisories, especially during early morning hours when visibility remains low.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution during fog and smog conditions, stressing the importance of reduced speed and safe distance to prevent such tragedies. An investigation into the incident is underway.
