Bengaluru: India’s aviation sector is moving toward a fully digital future, with a successful biometric travel trial conducted at Kempegowda International Airport positioning the country among global leaders in contactless air travel.
The pilot project, led by Bangalore International Airport Limited in collaboration with IndiGo, the Digi Yatra Foundation, and the International Air Transport Association, tested a seamless international passenger journey powered entirely by biometric authentication.
The trial eliminated the need for repeated document checks, allowing passengers to move through various airport stages using a single digital identity. The initiative aligns with IATA’s global “One ID” vision, aimed at enabling paperless and contactless travel experiences worldwide.
Earlier implementations of Digi Yatra had focused on domestic travel, but this latest development extends the concept to international passengers. The system uses facial recognition technology to verify identity across checkpoints, significantly reducing wait times and enhancing overall efficiency.
Officials from BIAL highlighted that Bengaluru airport is currently the only airport in India participating in this global proof-of-concept alongside major international hubs. With growing international traffic, plans are underway to expand the system for wider use.
Industry experts believe such innovations could transform airport operations by cutting queues and streamlining processes, making travel faster and more convenient.
Senior officials involved in the project noted that the long-term goal is to create a passenger-controlled, privacy-focused ecosystem where digital identity replaces traditional travel documentation.
The successful trial marks a key step in India’s journey toward next-generation aviation, with technology playing a central role in reshaping how passengers experience air travel.
