Bengaluru – BEML on Thursday unveiled the prototype of its new driverless metro trainsets, developed for Bengaluru’s expanding Namma Metro network under Phases 2, 2A and 2B, including the upcoming Airport Line. The prototype, designed for the Pink Line, was formally rolled out by BMRCL Managing Director J Ravishankar in the presence of BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy and senior officials at the BEML Rail Complex, where a test run was also conducted.
Under the contract, BEML will supply 318 standard-gauge coaches manufactured at its Bengaluru facility for the Blue Line connecting the airport and the Pink Line running from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara. The trainsets will undergo rigorous testing and commissioning according to BMRCL’s schedule and will receive comprehensive maintenance support for up to 15 years.
BEML said the rollout marks a major step in executing the ₹3,177-crore contract awarded through a competitive bidding process. The prototype showcases the company’s expanding role in India’s metro sector, especially in GoA4-level driverless urban transit systems. The August 2023 order for 53 driverless trainsets later increased to 66 trainsets with a total of 396 coaches, all designed and engineered in-house.
Roy said the prototype represents another milestone in delivering next-generation mobility solutions for India’s fast-growing cities. Ravishankar said the new trainsets would enhance the commuter experience on the R6 Line and the ORR–Airport Line.
BEML said the driverless metro trains come with energy-efficient systems, improved passenger information displays, extra-wide gangways, USB charging ports, ergonomic seating and better accessibility features. They also comply with upgraded fire safety and crashworthiness standards and support Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) for fully automated operations.
