Panaji (Goa)— At least 25 people were killed and six others injured after a massive fire broke out shortly after midnight at a popular nightclub in North Goa, police confirmed on Sunday. The toll, initially reported as 23, was revised after two more bodies were recovered.

The blaze occurred at Birch by Romeo Lane, a well-known nightlife venue in Arpora, roughly 25 kilometres from Panaji. A police spokesperson said the deceased included four tourists and 14 staff members, while the identities of seven others are yet to be confirmed.

Six people who suffered burns and smoke inhalation are undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.

Officials said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. “The police and fire department are conducting a detailed inquiry, and legal action is underway,” the spokesperson added.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said initial findings indicate the nightclub had failed to comply with mandatory fire safety norms. He also assured action against those responsible for allowing the establishment to operate despite violations.

“This tragedy has struck during peak tourist season, making it even more distressing,” Sawant said. “A full investigation will be carried out, and strict action will be taken against the club management as well as officials who neglected oversight.”

The nightclub, which opened last year, was a popular attraction for both locals and tourists.
