Chandrapur: Nineteen students from a government-run school in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district were admitted to hospital after reportedly ingesting an excessive quantity of iron supplements meant to prevent anaemia, officials confirmed on Friday.
The incident occurred at a Zilla Parishad school in Bhamdeli village of Bhadravati tehsil. According to local authorities, iron tablets are routinely distributed to students once a week as part of a health initiative. However, preliminary information suggests that a group of children consumed additional tablets the following day in the absence of teaching staff.
Soon after, the students complained of discomfort, prompting school authorities to rush them to a nearby medical facility. Their condition is said to be stable.
District officials have ordered an inquiry to determine how the tablets were accessed without supervision and to fix responsibility. The education and health departments are expected to review safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
