Landslide in Shimla Buries Vehicles Under Debris, Disrupts Traffic and Apple Transport

Shimla: Torrential rainfall in Himachal Pradesh’s capital has triggered a major landslide near the Kali Mata Temple in Vikasnagar, burying at least five vehicles under thick debris and prompting urgent rescue and clearance efforts. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

The landslide, which occurred late Saturday night following relentless downpours, has brought vehicular movement to a complete standstill in the Vikasnagar area. The road remains sealed off from both directions, leaving residents stranded and raising concerns over further disruptions if rain continues.

Continuous Rain Fuels Fears of Escalation

Local residents, already on edge due to the unstable weather, fear more such incidents if the rain doesn’t let up. The area, which is known to be vulnerable during the monsoon, has seen multiple small slips over the past week, but this is the most severe so far this season.

Officials from the district administration and Shimla Municipal Corporation rushed to the site and have been working to clear the debris. However, persistent rain is slowing down the operation, making access and machinery movement difficult.

Apple Harvest Takes a Hit

Beyond the immediate impact in Vikasnagar, the landslides and road blockages are also affecting Shimla’s crucial apple season. Orchard owners report that waterlogging and cut-off rural routes have halted harvesting and transport, raising fears of major financial losses.

“Apples are rotting in the orchards because we can’t get them to the markets,” said one grower from a nearby village. “If this continues for another few days, it will be devastating.”

Administration Issues Rain Alert

In light of the worsening conditions, the district administration has issued a high alert and urged people to stay away from landslide-prone slopes, rivers, and streams. A 24-hour heavy rainfall warning has been issued by the Meteorological Department, with officials cautioning that any negligence could prove dangerous.

City Roads Becoming Treacherous

The impact of the rain isn’t limited to Vikasnagar. Reports of tree falls, minor landslips, and blocked roads are coming in from various parts of Shimla city. Commuting has become increasingly risky, and the local authorities are requesting residents to limit travel to essential needs only.

Emergency response teams remain on the ground, but the weather continues to challenge relief efforts. As the monsoon shows no signs of easing, the situation remains tense and dynamic, with officials closely monitoring vulnerable areas for further developments.
