Panipat: In a shocking development, Haryana police have arrested a 32-year-old woman named Poonam for allegedly murdering four children over the past two years, including her own three-year-old son. Investigators say she confessed to drowning the victims, reportedly driven by jealousy and animosity toward young girls.
Authorities are exploring claims from victim families that some of the deaths coincided with Ekadashi, raising concerns about a potential ritualistic aspect. Surendra, whose six-year-old niece Jia was among the alleged victims, said that three killings in his family followed a similar pattern on the Ekadashi day. Police have stated that while they are investigating these assertions, the primary motive identified so far appears psychological.
Surendra, speaking to the media, said he had previously suspected Poonam but did not report her due to social pressures. He expressed fear for other children’s safety and demanded capital punishment, warning that she could strike again if released.
Profile and Community Reaction
Villagers in Naultha, where the latest killing occurred on December 1, described Poonam as educated, reserved, and well-mannered, holding MA and BEd degrees. Her husband, Naveen, said she had never shown signs of mental illness and described the family as devastated.
Details of the Crimes
The most recent incident involved six-year-old Vidhi, who was allegedly lured to a room on the first floor of a house and drowned in a small tub. According to police, Poonam then locked the room and rejoined a wedding taking place downstairs, where some guests noticed her wet clothes before she changed. Vidhi’s grandfather, Pal Singh, noted that Poonam had previously tried to spill hot tea on the girl, which the family now interprets as a deliberate attempt to harm her.
During questioning, Poonam reportedly admitted to killing:
-
Her three-year-old son, Shubham, in 2023
-
Another child in Bhawar village, also in 2023
-
Six-year-old Jia, her cousin’s daughter, in August 2025
-
Vidhi, on December 1, 2025
The police said that she appeared to target girls she deemed beautiful, and killed her own son possibly to avoid suspicion.
Vidhi’s infant sibling, now under the care of the girl’s grandmother, has been moved to safety.
Ongoing Investigation
Panipat SP Bhupender Singh confirmed that authorities are examining both the psychological profile of Poonam and the possible ritualistic elements tied to Ekadashi. The investigation remains active as the police gather more evidence.
