CHANDIGARH, April 11, 2026: In a major decision aimed at protecting religious sanctity, the Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved a stringent amendment to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The proposed law includes a provision of life imprisonment for acts of sacrilege (Beadbi) against Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
The amendment bill will be introduced in a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha scheduled for Monday.
Stricter Law to Prevent Sacrilege Incidents

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by CM Bhagwant Mann. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, several past incidents of sacrilege involving Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and other holy scriptures have deeply hurt public sentiments and disturbed social harmony.
The government noted that existing provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 address such offences, but the punishments are not strong enough to act as an effective deterrent.
After detailed discussions, the state government decided that stricter legal measures are necessary to prevent such incidents and ensure respect for religious beliefs.
Life Imprisonment Provision in Amendment Bill
Under the proposed Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, enhanced penalties have been introduced, including life imprisonment for those found guilty of committing sacrilege.
The Cabinet emphasized that the amendment is aimed at safeguarding the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and promoting mutual respect and understanding among communities.
Focus on Peace and Communal Harmony
The government stated that the move is crucial in maintaining peace, communal harmony and social stability in Punjab.
Officials said that the proposed legislation is expected to act as a strong deterrent against individuals with malicious intent and help prevent future incidents of sacrilege.
The Punjab Government reiterated its commitment to preserving religious values and ensuring strict action against those who attempt to disturb harmony in the state.
