Chandigarh:The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has strongly urged the central BJP government to respect Sikh sentiments. MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ be renamed as ‘Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas’ to honor the martyrdom of the four Sahibzades. The Punjab government criticized the Centre for ignoring the religious sentiments of the Sikh community and not giving due respect to Punjab’s glorious history, emphasizing that this step is essential to preserve the state’s cultural and religious identity.
In his letter, MP Seechewal highlighted that the sacrifice of the Sahibzades should be recognized at the national level. He urged that the day be named ‘Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas’ to reflect the true spirit of the Sikh community’s martyrdom. The Punjab government has treated this matter seriously and called upon the central government to consider the petitions of Sikh organizations and the people of Punjab with sensitivity. Citizens have expressed strong support, stating that the government is defending Punjab’s honor and identity.

Over the past two years, the Mann government has taken several initiatives to promote Sikh religion, Punjabi culture, and public welfare. These include schemes for the development of Gurdwaras, preservation of historical sites, promotion of religious tourism, support for the Punjabi language, youth employment programs, and improved health services. Analysts note that this issue reflects growing tensions between the Centre and Punjab, while the Aam Aadmi Party’s firm stance has strengthened public trust in the government and reinforced its image as a protector of Punjab’s rights and heritage.
