Delhi: A man lost his life while his wife sustained injuries after a fire erupted inside their residence in southeast Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin area on Saturday evening, allegedly caused by an electric geyser malfunction, police officials said.
The incident took place around 5 pm when emergency services received a PCR alert about a severe fire inside a locked house. Responding swiftly, police and rescue teams reached the location and were forced to break open the door, which was bolted from inside.
During the rescue operation, officials found the homeowner, identified as 50-year-old Mohammad Sayed Nizami, unconscious inside the bathroom. His wife, Fida Nizami (45), was also discovered in an unconscious state. Both were believed to have inhaled heavy smoke following the blaze.
The couple was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Mohammad Sayed Nizami dead. His wife is currently undergoing treatment, and her condition is reported to be stable.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was triggered by an explosion in an electric geyser installed in the bathroom, which rapidly spread smoke throughout the house. Authorities are examining the appliance and the electrical setup to ascertain the exact cause.
Police said further legal action will follow after a detailed forensic inspection and post-mortem examination.
