Chandigarh: A disturbing crime shocked residents of Chandigarh’s Sector 40 on Monday morning, when a 39-year-old woman was found murdered in her home, allegedly by her younger son. The incident took place on Diwali, a day traditionally associated with celebration and family gatherings.

The victim, identified as Sushila Negi, originally hailed from the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. According to officials, she was found with her throat slit in her bedroom. Preliminary reports suggest she was attacked while she was asleep.

Police were alerted by neighbors around 7 a.m. after they heard distressing sounds and noticed bloodstains near the home. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the body and immediately cordoned off the area. Forensic teams were dispatched to collect evidence.

The primary suspect in the case is her son, Ravi, who reportedly fled the scene shortly after the incident. He is said to be employed in the Examination Branch of Punjab University. Investigators believe Ravi has been dealing with psychological issues and has a history of conflict within the family.

“Initial inquiries indicate that the suspect may have been mentally unstable and had frequent disagreements with his mother,” said a senior police official. “The two were the only residents of the house, as the rest of the family lives separately.”

Ravi’s wife and daughter had moved out some time ago, allegedly due to his erratic behavior and domestic tensions. He also has an elder brother who lives with his own family in Sector 41. The family had been coping with the loss of their father, who passed away nearly a decade ago.

Local residents expressed disbelief and sorrow over the incident. Many described Ravi as a quiet individual, and said there had been no visible signs that something so violent could occur.

Blood was found pooled throughout the drawing room of the residence, underscoring the brutality of the attack. Authorities have registered a case of murder and launched a search operation to apprehend the accused.

Chandigarh Police have formed multiple teams to track down Ravi, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and circumstances that led to the crime.

As forensic experts continue their work and statements are being recorded, the city mourns a deeply unsettling Diwali — one marked not by lights and joy, but by silence and tragedy.
