Chandigarh: A high-intensity explosion outside the Punjab unit office of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening sparked panic and raised fresh concerns over the security of political establishments in the region.
The blast occurred around 4:45 pm near the boundary wall adjoining the Rotary Blood Bank in Sector 37. The impact damaged nearby vehicles and created panic among residents and passersby. However, no casualties were reported.
Police and security agencies rushed to the scene shortly after the incident, cordoned off the area, and launched an investigation. Forensic teams have begun examining the site to determine the nature and source of the explosion.
The incident has also brought attention to earlier threats targeting BJP leaders in Punjab. In July 2024, several leaders reportedly received life-threatening letters accompanied by explosive materials. Following those threats, a case was registered under the Explosive Act at a local police station.
Officials said investigators are examining whether the latest explosion is linked to those earlier incidents. Multiple angles, including the possibility of a targeted attack or terror involvement, are being probed.
Security has been tightened across key locations in Chandigarh and nearby areas as a precautionary measure. Authorities have urged heightened vigilance while assuring that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
