New Delhi: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has launched a simplified registration scheme from today, allowing small and low-risk businesses to receive GST registration within three working days.

Applicants identified by the GST system as low-risk through data analysis, or those who self-assess that their monthly output tax liability will not exceed ₹2.5 lakh (including CGST, SGST/UTGST, and IGST), can now opt for the new scheme.

The GST Council, comprising the Union and state finance ministers, approved the move during its meeting on September 3. The initiative aims to ease compliance for small enterprises and encourage formalization of businesses.

According to the new provisions, taxpayers can voluntarily join or withdraw from the scheme based on their eligibility and business needs.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while inaugurating the CGST building in Ghaziabad, said the scheme is expected to benefit around 96% of new applicants. “The task of the field formation is to operationalize it and ensure there is no friction in the process,” she said.

Sitharaman also directed the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to establish dedicated help desks at GST Seva Kendras to assist applicants during the registration process.

Currently, more than 1.54 crore businesses are registered under the GST framework across the country. The simplified registration system is expected to significantly reduce waiting times and improve ease of doing business for small traders and startups.
