Chandigarh: In a landmark step towards promoting aquatic biodiversity and strengthening the state’s fisheries sector, Punjab Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian officially declared Rohu (Labeo Rohita) as the State Fish of Punjab. The announcement was made during a ceremony at his office in Chandigarh.

Minister Khudian highlighted Punjab’s expanding aquaculture landscape, noting that the state currently has 43,683 acres under fish farming, producing over 200,000 metric tonnes of fish annually. Rohu contributes nearly 21% of this yield, with production reaching 42,353 metric tonnes and market prices ranging between Rs 160 to Rs 200 per kg. The species, known for its distinctive fusiform body and large cycloid scales, can weigh up to 45 kilograms in natural conditions.

Describing Rohu as a “nutritional powerhouse,” the minister said it is rich in proteins, vitamins A, B, D, and Omega-3 fatty acids, making it one of the most preferred freshwater delicacies across India.

Congratulating the Fisheries Department and stakeholders, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian emphasized that the recognition of Rohu underscores the crucial role of Indian Major Carps (Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal) in Punjab’s aquaculture sector.

Principal Secretary Rahul Bhandari stated that the designation will help in formulating targeted policies to enhance Rohu populations and promote sustainable fish farming practices. He added that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government has created self-employment opportunities for 637 beneficiaries in fish farming, offering Rs 30.63 crore in subsidies through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Director Fisheries Gurpreet Singh and other senior officials were also present at the occasion. The minister reiterated that this initiative aims to supplement agriculture, generate rural income, and boost Punjab’s economy by promoting large-scale aquaculture.
