Chandigarh: Electricity consumers in Chandigarh are set to face a shock as power tariffs have been increased across all categories — domestic, commercial, industrial, and other sectors — starting November 1. The new rates will make electricity about one percent costlier, affecting more than two lakh consumers in the city.

Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has approved the proposal to hike electricity rates, following clearance from the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC). According to JERC’s decision, tariffs will rise by 0.94 percent, translating to an increase of 5 to 10 paise per unit. The revised rates will take effect from November 1.

Domestic consumers have now been divided into three categories, each with separate tariff slabs. JERC has also approved a 2 percent annual tariff increase for the next five years.

Following the rate hike, CPDL is expected to generate ₹1,075 crore in revenue from consumer bills starting November, while its annual expenditure is projected to reach ₹1,157 crore.
