New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to embark on a key diplomatic tour of Japan and China starting around August 29, according to people familiar with the matter.

The first stop of the visit is likely to be Japan, where Modi is expected to hold annual summit-level talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts to deepen strategic and economic ties between the two nations.

Following his Japan visit, Modi is likely to head to China to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, scheduled for August 31 to September 1. If confirmed, this would mark his first visit to China since the tense military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in 2020.

While speculation around the visit is growing, there has been no official confirmation yet from the Ministry of External Affairs.
