New Delhi— A 27-year-old man who allegedly posed as an Indian Army lieutenant to deceive and rape a woman doctor has been arrested, police said on Monday. The accused, identified as Aarav Malik, a resident of Chhattarpur in South Delhi, was working as a delivery agent for an e-commerce company.

According to officials, Malik had no association with the Indian Army. During questioning, it was revealed that he had purchased the Army uniform from a shop in the Delhi Cantonment area to fabricate his false identity.

The victim, a 27-year-old doctor employed at a reputed government hospital, met Malik through social media earlier this year. According to the FIR filed at Sarojini Nagar Enclave police station, the two began communicating frequently between April 30 and September 27 via Instagram and WhatsApp. Malik allegedly introduced himself as an Army lieutenant posted in Kashmir and sent her photos of himself in uniform to earn her trust.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel stated that Malik later visited the woman’s residence, offered her something to eat, and then sexually assaulted her under the guise of his fake identity.

Following her complaint, police registered a case on October 16 under Sections 64(1) (rape), 351 (criminal intimidation), 319 (cheating by personation), and 123 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Malik was arrested soon after, and further investigation into the case is underway, police said.
