Kuala Lumpur: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to discuss a range of issues aimed at reviving and strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and the United States. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the annual ASEAN summit, comes amid efforts to resolve trade disputes and enhance cooperation in key areas such as commerce and global security.
In a brief social media post, Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, saying, “It was a pleasure to meet with Secretary of State Rubio in Kuala Lumpur this morning. We had a productive conversation on the state of our bilateral relations and touched on several regional and global issues.”
Efforts to Resolve Trade Tensions
The meeting marks an important step in addressing the tensions that have emerged over the past year between the two nations, particularly in the wake of the US imposing tariffs on Indian goods. The 50 percent tariff, introduced during the Trump administration, includes punitive measures such as a 25 percent additional duty on India’s imports of Russian crude oil. This decision has been a point of contention, with India calling it “unfair” and “unreasonable.”
Jaishankar and Rubio’s talks are understood to have included discussions on how to resolve these trade issues, with a specific focus on advancing the first phase of a proposed bilateral trade agreement. So far, five rounds of discussions have been held regarding the trade deal, which is expected to boost economic ties between the two countries. Both leaders are hopeful that the agreement will be finalized soon, paving the way for smoother trade relations moving forward.
A Broader Strategic Partnership
While trade disputes were high on the agenda, the talks also focused on broader geopolitical concerns. Both leaders discussed regional stability and ways to further deepen cooperation between the two nations in areas such as defense, technology, and climate change. Jaishankar also took the opportunity to meet with key ASEAN leaders ahead of the summit, including Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeo. These discussions were centered on strengthening India’s engagement with Southeast Asia and ensuring that the region remains peaceful and prosperous.
