Governor Orders Major Shake-Up: Chandigarh MC Chief Engineer Sanjay Arora Removed Before Tenure Ends

Chandigarh: In a rare administrative move, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has ordered the removal of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Chief Engineer Sanjay Arora from his post, triggering a fresh round of political discussion within civic circles. The decision follows mounting tensions between Arora, several BJP councillors, and Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla.

Sources revealed that KP Singh is being considered the frontrunner to take charge as the next Chief Engineer. The Governor’s direct involvement in the transfer is unusual, as such matters are typically handled by the Home Secretary (Local Government).

Appointed on deputation on September 24, 2024, Arora’s removal comes just one year into his three-year tenure — making him the first Chief Engineer in recent years to be ousted before completing his term.

According to official sources, multiple complaints had reached Raj Bhavan over the past few months. Councillors accused Arora of poor coordination and stalled infrastructure projects. His strained relationship with BJP councillors close to the Mayor reportedly widened the rift. Allegations also surfaced regarding leaks of sensitive information related to the Manimajra Housing Project.

Further friction arose from the Architect Department, which expressed dissatisfaction with Arora’s style of functioning. Despite being supported by certain senior officials, the cumulative pressure reportedly led to the Governor’s decision.

Sanjay Arora, who was the first Chief Engineer appointed on deputation directly from the UT Administration rather than the Punjab or Haryana cadre, is expected to return to his parent department following his removal.
