Jaisalmer/Jodhpur: A horrific fire that engulfed an AC sleeper bus near Jaisalmer has claimed at least 20 lives, with investigators now pointing to a jammed exit door as a key factor behind the high fatality rate.

According to police sources, the malfunctioning door left many passengers unable to escape as flames quickly spread through the vehicle. The tragedy unfolded just minutes after the private bus departed Jaisalmer en route to Jodhpur on Tuesday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses and first responders described a chaotic scene, with passengers trapped inside the burning vehicle as locals and emergency services struggled to break open exits. Fifteen people sustained severe burn injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals in Jodhpur and nearby districts.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma called the incident “deeply tragic” and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He visited the incident site and reviewed the ongoing rescue and medical efforts, directing officials to provide all necessary assistance to survivors and victims’ families.

Authorities are now focused on verifying the identities of those killed, as many of the bodies were charred beyond recognition. Forensic teams have been deployed to assist in the identification process, and DNA testing may be used if required.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have originated in the engine compartment or electrical system, though a detailed forensic report is awaited. Police have also launched a probe into the bus operator’s safety protocols and vehicle maintenance history.

The Rajasthan government has announced compensation for the victims and assured strict action against any lapses found in the operation or licensing of the private bus service.

As the state mourns this devastating loss, questions are being raised about passenger safety, vehicle inspections, and emergency preparedness for long-distance buses operating in remote areas.
