Dehradun: Uttarakhand GST headquarters unearthed a major tax evasion racket worth over Rs 20 lakh in Haldwani, Kumaon, allegedly involving collusion with joint commissioner-level officials.

Authorities had received repeated complaints that transporters were bringing goods into Haldwani while evading taxes. One transporter was reportedly shielded by a senior departmental officer, hindering local enforcement efforts.

In response, GST teams from Rudrapur conducted highly confidential raids on two transport companies in Haldwani earlier this week, under heavy police security. The operation led to the seizure of a significant quantity of goods brought in without proper documentation or with falsified documents.

Investigations revealed that the evaded taxes on the consignment exceeded Rs 20 lakh. Under Section 130 of the GST Act, the total penalty has been determined at approximately Rs 25 lakh. Both the goods and the transport vehicle have been seized and will remain in the department’s custody until the fine is paid.

Officials confirmed that the inquiry also uncovered attempts by a senior officer to use her influence to obstruct departmental proceedings, which is now under separate investigation. The GST headquarters emphasized that such malpractices will be met with strict action in line with the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who also holds the Finance portfolio, has reaffirmed the administration’s firm stance against tax evasion and corruption.
