Heavy Rainfall Threatens Flooding in Punjab, Alerts Issued Across Multiple Districts

Chandigarh: The risk of flooding has resurfaced in Punjab as persistent rain and significant water releases from key dams have put authorities on high alert. A fresh wave of rainfall swept through parts of the state on Sunday, prompting meteorological warnings and close monitoring of river levels.

Rain lashed Jalandhar early in the day, providing some relief from the recent heat, while Amritsar saw overnight showers that led to waterlogging in several low-lying neighbourhoods. Ludhiana experienced brief morning drizzle under heavy cloud cover, though the rain paused shortly after. In Mohali, despite high humidity, the sky remained overcast with a chance of rainfall later in the day.

Triggered by an active Western Disturbance, the current weather system is expected to impact northern India through Tuesday morning. Forecasters warn that heavier-than-usual rainfall in surrounding hilly regions—particularly in Himachal Pradesh—is raising the flood threat downstream in Punjab.

In response, an orange alert has been issued for 13 districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Rupnagar, among others. A yellow alert is in effect for the rest of the state. Gusty winds reaching up to 40 km/h have been reported in several areas.

Authorities are closely watching river levels, especially with major discharges from the Bhakra, Pong, and Ranjit Sagar (Thein) dams over the past 24 hours. On Saturday alone, around 40,000 cusecs of water was released from Bhakra, nearly 39,000 cusecs from Pong, and over 33,000 cusecs from Thein Dam. These controlled releases aim to prevent pressure buildup in the reservoirs but have led to a noticeable rise in the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers.

District administrations in flood-prone areas have been placed on standby, especially in regions along the riverbanks. So far, the situation remains under control, but with continued rainfall forecasted, officials are preparing for any potential emergencies. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow updates from local authorities.
