Kochi: A 29-year-old fashion designer was apprehended at Cochin International Airport on Sunday after customs officials discovered six kilograms of hybrid ganja concealed in his luggage.

The accused, identified as Abdul Jaleel Jasmal, a native of Kodungalloor, was intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) shortly after his arrival from Bangkok. During a routine inspection in the early hours of the day, officers found six neatly packed parcels of the high-potency cannabis hidden in his handbag.

Customs sources revealed that the intercepted substance is a genetically modified variety of marijuana, often referred to as “hybrid ganja,” known for its stronger effects and higher market value. The seizure marks another concerning instance of international drug trafficking attempts through Kerala’s airports.

Officials said Jasmal was taken into custody immediately, and further investigation is underway to determine whether he was acting alone or is part of a larger smuggling network. Authorities are also exploring possible links to overseas narcotics syndicates operating between Southeast Asia and India.

The case has been handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for further action. Airport security and customs teams have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance, especially on flights arriving from known drug transit routes.

This incident underscores the growing concern over the trafficking of synthetic and high-grade narcotics into the country through unsuspecting or unconventional carriers, including individuals from professional backgrounds.
