Himachal Pradesh Lottery Row: The controversy surrounding the Himachal Pradesh government’s decision to restart the lottery system has intensified, with Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur leveling serious allegations against the state government. Thakur has claimed that a “major deal” was struck outside the state to push for the lottery’s revival, raising questions about where, with whom, and for how much this agreement was made.
Speaking to the media, Thakur alleged that a powerful lobby is pressuring the government to implement the lottery system. “If this lottery is to be started in Himachal Pradesh, why was the deal finalized in Punjab? Who is behind this? There is something big going on, and BJP will not remain silent. We will soon formulate a strategy and take this matter up strongly,” he asserted.
Thakur criticized the government’s reasoning that the lottery would improve the state’s financial condition, pointing out that the system had been shut down twice in the past due to its adverse effects. “The Dhumal government closed the lottery because many families were ruined, and their homes were auctioned. Later, the Virbhadra government revived it but, after introspection, decided to shut it down again. Now, this Congress government wants to start it once more, which is completely wrong,” he said.
The former chief minister also attacked the Congress government for failing to deliver on its promises of increasing revenue. “They promised to levy a water cess, which never happened. They claimed they would reform the excise policy, but instead of an increase, revenue has fallen. This government is opening liquor shops while shutting down schools. Despite imposing tax after tax, the state’s income has not improved,” Thakur said.
He further warned that Himachal’s worsening financial situation has become so dire that even the High Court had to question why a financial emergency should not be declared in the state.
Meanwhile, the BJP has indicated that it will launch a strong protest against what it calls an “anti-people move” by the government.
