Amritsar: When Team India lifted the Asia Cup trophy for a record ninth time, it wasn’t just the nation that celebrated — for one family in Punjab, it was also the fulfillment of a heartfelt wish.

Abhishek Sharma, the 23-year-old batting sensation from Amritsar, played a crucial role in India’s undefeated Asia Cup campaign, scoring a tournament-high 314 runs in seven matches. But behind the on-field fireworks was a promise he had made to his sister: win the Asia Cup as her wedding gift.

A Sister’s Wish, A Brother’s Promise

Speaking to reporters, Komal Sharma, Abhishek’s sister, shared that when her brother had asked what she wanted as a wedding present, she replied with just one request: “Bring home the Asia Cup.”

“I told him, India jeet jaye bas, aur kuch nahi chahiye (Let India win, I don’t want anything else),” said Komal, beaming with pride. “And he kept his promise.”

With her wedding scheduled for October 3 at Festenira Resort in Amritsar, and pre-wedding rituals beginning today in Ludhiana, the Asia Cup triumph has brought double celebration to the Sharma household.

Family Ties and Cricket Bonds

The Sharma family shares a close bond not only with Abhishek but also with other young Indian cricket stars. Komal mentioned that Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh, both Abhishek’s close friends, feel like extended family.

“They’re like brothers to us,” she said. “It feels amazing that all three played such big roles in India’s victory.”

The groom, Lovish Oberoi, hails from a well-known business family in Ludhiana. Komal revealed that the entire Indian team has been invited to the wedding, though most players are currently occupied with their cricketing commitments.

Celebration in Amritsar Despite Quiet Final

Although Abhishek didn’t shine in the Asia Cup final, his consistency throughout the tournament made him the tournament’s top scorer. With three half-centuries, a strike rate of 200, and a best score of 75, he left a lasting impression on fans and selectors alike.

Back home in Amritsar, the Sharma family is elated.

“It’s like we’re already celebrating the wedding,” said a family member. “Abhishek may not have scored in the final, but he gave us memories for a lifetime.”

Cricket and Celebration Collide

With the wedding now just days away, the Sharma-Oberoi families are preparing for a star-studded Punjabi celebration, hoping that some of India’s cricket heroes might make a surprise appearance.

One thing is certain — for Komal Sharma, no gift could have been more special than seeing her brother help bring home the Asia Cup.
