New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that India’s next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms will come into effect from September 22, describing the move as a “GST Savings Festival” aimed at enhancing consumer purchasing power.
Addressing the nation, PM Modi said the reforms mark a significant step under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and will benefit every segment of society, especially the poor, neo-middle class, and middle class. “This double bonanza—income tax exemption on earnings up to Rs 12 lakh and GST reforms—will increase savings and make essential goods more affordable,” he noted.
Highlighting the broader economic impact, the Prime Minister said the GST amendments will simplify business operations, reduce compliance hurdles, and ensure uniform participation by all states in India’s growth story. “Earlier, citizens were burdened by a web of taxes and tolls, but GST has brought relief, realizing the dream of one nation-one tax,” he added.
PM Modi further emphasized that the reforms will accelerate India’s growth trajectory and make festive celebrations sweeter for families across the country. The “GST Savings Festival” is expected to enhance household savings while providing a boost to trade and commerce during the festival season.
