Amritsar — The Commissionerate Police in Amritsar has dismantled a major drug trafficking network, arresting two smugglers near the Golden Gate checkpoint following a tip-off. Officials said the accused were transporting a large consignment of opium from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh to Punjab.

During the operation, police intercepted a Thar Rox vehicle and detained two suspects, identified as Harvinder Singh alias Harry and Ranjit Singh alias Rana. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 12 kilograms of opium, ₹6,000 in drug money, and the vehicle itself.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that the operation was based on specific intelligence and that both accused were already on the radar for previous involvement in drug trafficking. Investigations revealed that Harvinder Singh has been active in the trade since 2022, while his brother Gurpreet Singh was earlier booked in a case where 7 kilograms of opium were seized.

Both accused were arrested on September 18, and a case has been registered under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Police have launched further investigations to trace the supply chain and other members of the smuggling network.
