Chandigarh: Security agencies in Chandigarh were put on alert after a threatening email received on Friday morning named several schools and key government establishments as potential targets for bomb attacks. The message also referred to Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming show, warning of an explosion during the event.
The locations mentioned in the email included schools across Chandigarh, the Punjab Secretariat, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and the Mayor’s Office. Police and other security personnel carried out checks at the locations following the alert.
No bomb or suspicious object had been confirmed at any of the sites at the time of the report. Authorities were investigating the message to establish who sent it and whether the threat was credible.
What Time Did The Email Threaten Attacks?
The email reportedly listed separate times for the alleged attacks. Schools were named for 12:11 pm, while the Punjab Secretariat and Punjab Assembly were mentioned in connection with 3:11 pm. The Mayor’s Office was listed for 4:11 pm.
The message also warned parents against sending their children to Diljit Dosanjh’s show. It claimed that government offices and police-related establishments in Chandigarh could be targeted if permission was granted for the performance.
These timings and warnings were claims contained in the email and had not been independently verified. The investigation was focused on tracing the sender and assessing the seriousness of the threat.
Political Leaders Also Named In Threatening Message
The email reportedly mentioned Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, Manwinder Singh Giaspura and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, along with other names.
It also included references and signatures claiming links to banned or extremist organisations. However, the presence of these names and claims in the message does not establish that the individuals or organisations were involved in sending it.
Investigating agencies were working to establish the origin of the email and verify its contents.
Chandigarh Has Received Similar Threats Before
Several prominent institutions in Chandigarh have reportedly received bomb threats through emails in the past. These have included the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh District Court, bus terminals, passport offices, the Punjab Secretariat and government and private schools.
Such alerts have prompted security checks at affected buildings. In some earlier cases, searches did not result in the discovery of suspicious objects.
Mayor’s Security Also Comes Into Focus
The latest message has also brought attention to the security arrangements for Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi. He had previously written to a senior police officer seeking additional protection, reportedly referring to an earlier threatening email.
Although a gunman was already assigned to him, the Mayor had sought enhanced security. The available information did not confirm whether any additional protection had subsequently been approved.
Police and security agencies were continuing to investigate the latest threat and examine the claims made in the email.
