Chennai: A DMK councillor has been booked by Chennai police over alleged derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, following a speech at a party event that triggered protests by members of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The case was registered on Monday against councillor Sudha Dheena Dayalan and the event organiser after TVK functionary Udhaya Kumar filed a complaint. Police have summoned the councillor for questioning, according to the information available in the report.

The controversy centres on remarks Sudha allegedly made about Vijay during the DMK’s Mupperum Vizha at Raja Annamalai Mandram in Chennai on October 7. A video of the speech circulated publicly, drawing criticism from TVK leaders.

What Did The DMK Councillor Allegedly Say About Vijay?

During her address, Sudha reportedly used insulting language while defending former Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin against criticism of his appearance. She allegedly referred to Vijay as a “dog” and compared his appearance to that of a dead body.

DMK MP Kanimozhi and Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan were also present on the stage during the event, according to the report.

In the same speech, Sudha criticised Vijay’s political rise, alleging that he had gained power through social media reels and questioning whether he had fulfilled his promises. She also accused him of continuing schemes introduced by the previous DMK government.

The remarks have become the focus of a police complaint by a TVK functionary. The registration of a case does not, by itself, establish the allegations as proven.

Why Has The Incident Triggered A Political Row?

TVK leaders have questioned both the language used in the speech and the conduct of senior DMK figures who were present on stage.

TVK leader Kanimozhi Santhosh asked whether political differences justified abandoning basic respect and decorum at public events. She argued that criticism between political opponents should not cross into personal attacks.

Public Works Minister and TVK functionary Aadhav Arjuna also criticised the DMK in a post on X. He contrasted the role of political platforms during the time of Periyar and former chief minister CN Annadurai with what he described as the growing use of personal attacks and offensive language at DMK meetings under Stalin’s leadership.

These comments reflect the criticism being levelled by TVK leaders amid the dispute. The DMK councillor’s alleged remarks and the subsequent police action have brought political rhetoric and public conduct back into focus in Tamil Nadu.

What Is The Latest Police Action?

Police registered the case against Sudha and the event organiser following Udhaya Kumar’s complaint. The councillor has been called for questioning, but the available information does not specify the exact sections invoked or whether any arrest has been made.

The next developments will depend on the police inquiry and the evidence gathered in connection with the complaint.

Vijay has previously told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that political criticism is acceptable but that personal attacks and derogatory remarks against women should not be tolerated. His earlier comments have resurfaced in the wider debate over political speech and conduct.
