Chandigarh: In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned from his post as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. The Congress high command is anticipated to announce his successor within the next 24 to 48 hours to steady the party unit amid intensifying factional disputes.
The resignation follows a persistent power struggle between Warring and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi over the party’s state leadership. Factional friction within the state unit had escalated significantly in recent months, echoing the internal strife witnessed prior to the party’s defeat in the 2022 assembly elections, with leaders rallying around opposing camps.
Party insiders suggest that the central leadership is evaluating three prominent contenders to take over the helm of the state unit. Former cabinet minister Vijay Inder Singla, Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh, and Gurdaspur Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa have emerged as the primary candidates under active consideration.
The leadership transition gained momentum following ground assessments and detailed consultations led by the party’s Punjab affairs in-charge Sachin Pilot. After extensive discussions with key stakeholders across Punjab and New Delhi, Pilot reportedly submitted a comprehensive report advising structural adjustments to re-energize the grassroots cadre ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to the state.
Organizational preparations are currently underway at the national level, with AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal conducting high-level strategy meetings alongside district committee leaders and AICC co-in-charges Suraj Thakur, Ravinder Dalvi, and Hina Kavare to facilitate a smooth change of guard in the state.
